4 min read

In today’s modern age, it’s almost impossible to avoid the blue light emitted from gadgets, TV, mobile phones, computer, and so on. Americans spend an average of 10 hours a day looking at screens. And this number is expected to increase in coming years.

With too much exposure to blue light, many individuals are suffering from digital eye strain and overall eye damage. But why is this so? What is blue light and how does it work?

Here are some things you should know about blue light. Where does it come from? And how can you avoid its adverse effects, including the use of blue light filter  lenses?

What is Blue Light?

Light is composed of equal intensity of different elements of the visible light spectrum, including green light, red light, and blue light. Blue light’s short wavelength provides a high amount of energy, so it actually sits right next to UV light in the light spectrum. And we all know how harmful UV light can be.

Just like UV exposure can harm our skin and lead to cancer, too much exposure to blue light can also harm our eye health. And over time, it can be extremely harmful to the overall health. This is the reason many eye experts recommend avoiding and blocking blue light from gadgets as much as possible. And one of the ways to do this is by using blue light blocking lenses.

Health Risks

There are a ton of risks involved when we talk about blue lights. The long hours you spend looking at digital screens results in eye strain and disruption to sleep patterns which can lead to many negative health implications. Some blue light can cause long-term problems like macular degeneration, if not prevented. In fact, according to studies, 65% of the Americans have experienced symptoms of digital eye strain. Too much exposure to blue light can also severely damage the retina of your eyes. This can lead to premature aging of the eyes, and worst case scenario, permanent loss of vision. There is no definitive information yet as to how much exposure to blue light can affect our eyes. But one thing is for sure, the more blue light emitted over time, the higher the risk of eye damage is. Aside from eye health, exposure to blue light can also affect the body’s internal clock leading to sleep disorders, headaches, and fatigue.

Where does Blue Light come from?

Blue light isn’t anything new. As mentioned, it is part of the light spectrum which means it’s all around us. From our mobile phones and television, to our personal computers. But where do we usually get the bluest light? If your guess is “the sun,” you are right!

The most substantial source of blue light is from sun exposure. But of course, that’s not something you can fix. And just as there are man-made lagoons, there are also man-made lights. These were initially invented by Thomas Edison back in 1878. It was incandescent light at first and eventually evolved to its more energy efficient version which we now call LED. This stands for light-emitting diode. LEDs have become prevalent in recent years because of its energy efficiency.

The point is, even though you might not be facing the computer, you are still getting an abundant amount of blue light. You could be outside in the sun, or inside reading your favorite book under the LED lights.

So, what do we do?

With blue light coming from a number of sources, the best way to solve the problem is by lessening your exposure to it. There are a handful of ways to block blue light from your devices. You can install mobile applications that have blue light filtering features, and you can also activate your laptop or computer’s blue light filter settings. But these are only partially effective. The best option, as recommended by eye doctors, is to wear blue light filter glasses, with lenses that are specially formulated to block blue light. This way you won’t need to install apps or activate settings from all your devices, and you don’t need to turn off your LED bulbs to shield your eyes from the blue light. You can save all the hassle and have better quality protection by wearing a pair of good quality blue light filter glasses with blue light-blocking lenses.
